Networking’s Hugest Fib

By Keith Woolgar

There may be absolutely no doubt the fact that face-to-face networking is certainly one of the best, or even essentially the most effectual methods to showcase your self, your current cause or ones business.  It is a fact.

Usually, business networking is cheaper when compared with conventional marketing, and ties you professionally to your business interest, right in front of your consumers or future purchasers.  Bring in your date book to a meeting, book a business lunch immediately!  Hours of cold calling and target promoting; stand aside!  Who would not rather connect with their customers and potential consumers in an casual, familiar, non-confrontational surrounding like a networking event or by way of a business networking group?

Go figure!  Precisely why else would there be a great number of networking breakfast group meetings, business networking happy hours, speed networking events (you name it) and even more cropping up all the time?

Long gone are the times of being constrained to signing up for chambers of commerce and other service organizations, because now you can meet, greet and glad hand many other business networkers anytime, seven days a week when you desire to.  Imagine, BNI and LeTip are networking brand names comprised of thousands of networkers by themselves…it’s a social networking world, folks!  Now, with the current “online venues” like Facebook, networking has gone viral as housewives, Realtors, cake bakers and Fortune 500 companies interact by way of the new “social media”, that was not even a widespread phrase just three short years ago.  We as a society network, network, network!

The lie is that “business networking” functions.  The reality is , that attending networking events, joining the groups, being on Facebook, etc. does not work at all as a stand alone event to closing sales or doing business.  Yes, it takes much more…

Have you ever returned from a networking event with a handful of business cards with absolutely no resulting leads? Like, zero?  Of course, you have.  Did you ever stop a networking group simply because “it didn’t work”?  Yes you did.

Facts are, the churn rate (existing users falling away becoming replaced by brand-new members) may be up to 50% per year in a given networking organization.  Half dropping out, being replaced by new, enthusiastic newbies, who will in turn drop out aftera lame attempt at making networking work for them.
